Mortgage FAQ: What Paperwork Do I Need For a Mortgage?
"I’M GETTING READY TO APPLY FOR MY FIRST MORTGAGE. I KNOW I HAVE TO FILL OUT AN INITIAL LOAN APPLICATION, BUT WHAT PAPERWORK WILL I BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE?"
Besides the lender-supplied mortgage application and a few other forms and documents you’ll be asked to fill out by your lender, you’ll be required to submit the following when you apply:
Your W-2 forms from at least the past two years.
Your federal tax return from at least the past year.
Recent paycheck stubs or proof of direct deposit.
Profit and loss statements, if you own your own business.
Canceled checks for rental payments, if applicable.
Documents that verify assets (bank statements, investment statements, etc.).
Documents that verify debts (personal loans, credit cards, child support, etc.).
Some lenders require other documentation and how far back the documentation needs to cover (one year, two years, etc.) may vary. Your lender will either provide you with a checklist of the required paperwork or else they’ll walk you through what you’ll need to provide.
