Make Your Home More Eco-Friendly

If you want to make your home more eco-friendly, there are many ways to accomplish that.
The simplest way to be more eco-friendly is to make a few small changes. Although you may already recycle according to your city or county’s guidelines, consider the other two parts of the motto “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” by reducing the amount of waste you produce and reusing old materials. You can save 3-5 percent on your energy bill if you set your thermostat one degree lower in the winter and one degree higher in the summer. Another good way to be eco-friendly is to use cold water when washing clothes.
Beyond the everyday changes, there are plenty of small projects that you can complete that will have a positive impact. By swapping out your current light bulbs for long-lasting LED lights, you can have a much more cost-efficient home. If replacing your old appliances is within your budget, purchasing appliances rated by ENERGY STAR means that you’ll have appliances that are twice as efficient as many older models and you’ll probably be able to recoup the cost within just a few years.
If you’re really serious about having an eco-friendly home, think about large-scale projects. Having solar panels installed is increasing in popularity each year and financing is available for many of these solar projects. Since heating and cooling account for 50 percent of your home’s energy consumption, consider having your insulation replaced, your duct work upgraded and your windows replaced with more energy-efficient models. Not only will these projects make your home much more eco-friendly, but they’ll also put a big dent in your energy bill.
As mentioned above, these are just a few of the ways to make your home more environmentally-friendly. For more tips, visit epa.gov.
