With that in mind, you and your real estate agent will need to set a fair list price. Make sure you understand the market conditions—which do include the current season—and price your home accordingly.
Curb appeal is critical. Making your home look enticing from the outside is more challenging in the drab winter months, but you may have more of an opportunity in the winter to make it stand out from other homes. A few areas you’ll want to concentrate on are your entryway, general landscaping and cleanup, and especially your front door area.
Know the importance of light and warmth. Whether you live in a cold part of the country or in an area that has mild winters, the key to a cozy and inviting home is to emphasize light and warmth. Keep your interior lights on as much as possible and open all of your curtains and blinds. In terms of warmth, don’t be afraid to turn up the thermostat a few degrees higher.
Think about the other seasons. A buyer in the spring or summer may not consider what living in a particular home would be like in the winter, but that’s not always the case with buyers in the winter. Many savvy winter buyers will try to picture your home in the warmer months. Make sure you’re ready for any questions about your home in all seasons.
Remodeling isn’t just for the spring or summer. Repair and renovation costs are usually lower in the winter and many contractors offer better rates than in the peak remodeling months. Also, home remodeling stores often have more sales and offer bigger discounts in the winter, so if your home needs work, be on the lookout for deals.
