Mortgage FAQ: Should I decorate for the holidays when my house is on the market?
"I REALLY ENJOY GOING ALL-OUT WHEN I DECORATE FOR THE HOLIDAYS. HOWEVER, I JUST PUT MY HOUSE ON THE MARKET. SHOULD I NOT DECORATE AT ALL FOR THE HOLIDAYS OR IS IT OK TO DO WHAT I NORMALLY DO?"

Not decorating your home for the holidays is probably not a good idea. If your neighbors have holiday decorations up but you don’t, that may give off a negative vibe to potential buyers, so you should at least do some decorating for the holidays as most buyers do like to see the festive side of homes this time of year. However, don’t go overboard. Overdoing it with your decorations may be a turn-off to buyers so keep your decorating to a minimum. Try to avoid the urge to decorate every room in your home and consider having very few—if any—decorations that are visible from the street, such as lawn decorations or lights on the front of your house. Also, think about what kind of decorations to put up. Since not everyone celebrates every holiday this time of year, you may want to consider decorations that have a more “winter” feel to them, rather than decorations for a specific holiday (Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.). Before you start unpacking all of those boxes of decorations in your attic, talk to your real estate agent and get their advice of how to best decorate for the holidays when your home is on the market.
