Mortgage FAQ: What can we do if we can't find a house we want?
"WE’VE BEEN HOUSE HUNTING FOR OVER TWO MONTHS AND WE JUST CAN’T SEEM TO FIND THE HOUSE WE REALLY WANT TO BUY. WE’RE STARTING TO GET FRUSTRATED. WHAT CAN WE DO?"
It can be difficult when you can’t find the home of your dreams, but try not to get discouraged. The first thing you should do is sit down and decide what you want in a home versus what you need in a home. This may help you get a better idea of what you’re looking for in a home. Also, consider what you’re willing to sacrifice if you find a home that’s almost perfect for you. Are you willing to give up an extra bathroom in favor of more total square footage? Are you willing to buy a home that’s a little farther away from shopping centers in favor of a larger yard? Unfortunately, buying a home can be an exercise in trade-offs and compromise. Even if there’s plenty of inventory on the market in your area, sometimes it’s difficult to find the home that’s perfect for you in every way.
The one important thing that you should do is to bring your real estate agent into the conversation. Let them know that you’re frustrated and allow them to help you decide what you want verses what you need in a home. That way, they’ll be able to show you homes that fit your needs better, rather than showing you homes that aren’t quite what you’re looking for.
