Mortgage FAQ: Should I use an agent from outside my area?

Although many real estate agents do concentrate on specific areas, that doesn’t mean that an agent isn’t knowledgeable about other areas and neighborhoods nearby. In fact, many agents are well-versed in the market conditions of quite a large region and are able to apply their experience and knowledge to a much wider area. Yes, it does depend on how far away this agent’s area is and possibly the demographic differences between the two areas, but if nothing else, you should at least talk with your friend’s agent.

If this agent comes highly recommended by your friend, it’s definitely worth your time to chat with them—despite the fact that they may be on the other side of town. Even if they’re somewhat unfamiliar with your particular neighborhood, they certainly may be experienced enough to quickly assess and understand the market conditions in your area. Also, keep in mind that knowledge of a particular geographical area isn’t the only thing you need to look for in an agent. A real estate agent’s overall experience, willingness to help, ability to negotiate, honesty, and integrity—among many other traits—are just as important.
