Mortgage FAQ: How Long Will the Home-Buying Process Take?
"AFTER DRAGGING OUR FEET ON BUYING A NEW HOME, WE’VE DECIDED TO GET THE BALL ROLLING IN ORDER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LOW INTEREST RATES. HOW LONG WILL THE HOME-BUYING PROCESS TAKE?"

Although every situation is different, two to four months should be enough time to go through the process. If you haven’t started looking at homes yet, you should start now. The time it takes to find a home, make an offer and get your offer accepted could take as little as a few days or as long as a month or two. Once your offer has been accepted, plan on at least a month before you go to settlement.
Keep in mind that there could be unforeseen delays with inspections, disclosures, contingencies, or any other number of things, so plan accordingly. On the mortgage side, you’ll want to get started immediately so that you can lock into a low interest rate. Locking in a rate for 30 days is the industry standard, but you can ask for a longer rate lock. However, the longer you lock in for, the higher the fees will be.
Also, delays with financing can happen, so make sure to budget in extra time. If you’re serious about being in a new home within the next few months, you should start by talking to your real estate agent and mortgage professional as soon as possible.
