Yes, You Can Have a Smooth and Stress-Free Moving Day

Updated: Aug 12, 2021

For many people, moving day is one of the most stressful parts of the homebuying process. However, with a little preparation, you can make your moving day go much smoother.

Here are a few tips to help you have a stress-free moving day:

Visualize your move in advance. Much like everything else in the homebuying process, planning is key. You should visualize your entire moving day—from the time you get up in the morning to when you wave goodbye to the movers. It wouldn’t hurt to write out a complete plan—what happens at what time and what needs to be done when—for your moving day. If kids or pets are part of your move, you’ll need to plan your move with their needs in mind.

Be a smart packer. A smooth move begins with packing. Use plenty of bubble wrap, foam peanuts or newspapers to cushion your belongings. If you want to spend the extra money, many moving companies will pack for you. Also, you should label your boxes with a quick description of what’s in them and list where they go in your new home. Finally, pack your essentials last. Your essentials might include bedding, towels, food/snacks, utensils, toilet paper, toiletries, tools, paper plates, plastic cups, and paper towels. By packing these items last, you’ll have access to them first.

Know what you need for the journey. Whether you keep important phone numbers in your cell phone or written down, make sure they’re accessible. Also, make sure you have a way to contact the moving company crew and let them know how to get in touch with you as well. You should also keep your valuables with you. Accidents do happen, so it’s a very good idea to take anything of great value—such as photos, heirlooms, extremely fragile items, irreplaceable items, etc.—with you in your car on moving day. Finally, don’t forget to bring cash for miscellaneous travel expenses (and for tipping the moving crew).

Focus on the move, not your new home. Although it’s easy to let your thoughts drift towards your new home, focus on the actual move. Pay attention to things such as if the moving truck can get in and out of both your old neighborhood and your new one and if there are any obstacles they need to know about. When you and the movers arrive at your new home, don’t let them randomly stack boxes in whatever room is convenient and make sure you check your belongings and new home for damages caused by the move.
