Mortgage FAQ: How Does the Equifax Data Breach Affect My Credit?
"HOW CAN I DETERMINE IF THE RECENT EQUIFAX DATA BREACH AFFECTS ME? IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO DO IF IT DOES AFFECT ME? WILL MY CREDIT OR CREDIT SCORE BE HARMED?"

Equifax—one of the “big three” credit bureaus—experienced a data breach this past July that may have affected up to 123 million consumers. Although the breach mainly impacts consumers’ personal information such as names, addresses and social security numbers, credit card numbers for approximately 209,000 U.S. consumers may also have been accessed. To find out if you've been affected by this breach, go to https://trustedidpremier.com/eligibility/eligibility.html and enter your last name and the last six digits of your social security number. You can also call Equifax toll-free at (866) 447-7559.
If you are impacted by this data breach—or even if you aren’t—Equifax will let you enroll in a free year of credit monitoring and identity theft protection. Also, you may want to consider locking or “freezing” your credit, which you’ll need to do with all three credit bureaus: Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. If you lock your credit data, you’ll need to unlock it if you want to apply for credit, but it is an excellent safeguard. For more information on the Equifax data breach, visit Equifax’s dedicated website at https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com or talk to your mortgage professional.
